i heart swimming

jenny and i went to the gym on friday and saturday. friday was a cardio and light weights session, saturday was a pool and sauna session.
i forgot how intense swimming was. i guess i've really never tried to swim the length of an olympic-sized pool, but while doing the backstroke, i kept thinking, "am i there yet?" maybe since i'm heavier now than when i swam more often, it doesn't feel like i'm moving very fast, even when i'm kicking like crazy.
on friday, i was on the treadmill and was exhausted after twenty minutes. this was after biking and a little bit of elliptical work. what happened though was that i was working relatively high in my heart rate zone, and even though i wasn't going extremely fast, i just couldn't do anymore after awhile. i need to bring a towel with me... both to mop sweat off my face, and to cover up the treadmill display... :)
anyway... the fruits of my labor thus far, a small weight loss. i broke back through the 190 mark and i want to stay here on the other side! my goal for vegas in two months is 170. it sounds like too much to lose in two months but it's what i need to strive for, just so i have a goal in mind.

so close!

it's probably not the healthiest thing in the world to monitor weight on a daily basis... but when the numbers are on the decline, it is a bit of encouragement.

tonight i will try to refrain from getting any type of fast food-ish stuff on my journey to chillicothe, unless it's a six-inch turkey sub on wheat from subway. (gotta plan these things!)

also, i just remembered how much i like my vanilla almond tea with a little bit of honey. that has to be way less calories than a caramel latte from starbucks, right? :)

breaking through the barrier

yesterday i stepped on the scale and surprisingly weighed 190.6. (my dyslexic self nearly typed 109... now THAT would have been surprising!) anyway, i didn't think i had done enough to lose any weight and that was what surprised me. i'm thinking though, that the power of positive thinking might have lessened some stress and anxiety that i was feeling about myself.

i showed jenny and mickey the videos of some performances i had been meaning show them for awhile. i was incredibly nervous about showing the videos but one of them was the 2006 show for "the vagina monologues" and seeing as it was close to v-day, we had to watch it. i just happened to be in it as the last monologue. i remembered thinking (my own worst enemy) that i really didn't do that well compared to the other girls. i told jenny and mickey not to get their hopes up about my performance due to that fact. they "oh whatever"-ed me and we just watched the show. when it came to my part, i just was cringing inside: i was speaking too quickly, maybe not putting enough emotion into the words, etc. the show was over and the audience started clapping, and jenny said, "oh my god, kristen, that was really good!" and she went into specifics that i had glossed over while watching, which was when i was internally pointing out all my flaws. mickey said, "yeah, you made it sound like you were terrible, and you definitely weren't." then i thanked them and said, "yeah, i guess i really wasn't too bad."

i love my girls! i know too though that they wouldn't have just said those things to make me happy. they give it to me straight. i was so appreciative for the good feedback. it was tempered with some ridicule though in the next video where i made the most ghetto-fied crab costume ever and sang "kiss the girl," so i guess it all evens out! ;-)

the "breaking through the barrier" of my subject line refers to the 190 barrier that has been so hard to cross. i have a workout buddy now though and i'm ecstatic about it! there was a super-good deal at urban active and i was able to sign jenny up. it's right in her backyard, so just based on the convenience factor, and that it's on her way home, it's going to be a good thing. once i get done with my classes, we can work out together a lot more. for now, we're starting "healthy fridays" where we can go work out after work and then eat at flavors, which is a healthy restaurant near us that the three of us have been going to for the past few weeks. they have amazing hummus and non-fattening entrees, so it's a good places to go. beats cheese fries and chicken fingers on a friday night... mmm cheese fries. :)

at that point again

whenever i start to get back into going to the gym and working out, i get into this funk because:
  • my body aches from not being active
  • the scale decides to tell me that i've gained weight after working out for the week
  • i'm still tired as hell and other aspects of my life need to be dealt with
so i'm there again.

honestly, i haven't done enough cardio in the last week to lose a pound yet, so i'm not sure why i would expect my weight to drop. i think the extra weight may be due to the hoarding of water in my body and the increase in muscle from the two days that i strength-trained last week. my mantra must now be: "the scale will catch up... the scale will catch up..."

i loved the zumba class at the gym last saturday. i got my butt up and out the door by 9 am on a saturday, which is quite a feat in itself. i stood in the front of the room and did my best to follow the moves, while trying not to feel self-conscious about about being in the front of the room as a newbie. the room was surrounded by mirrors though, so i feel like everyone kind of gets "seen," whether it's just a reflection or the actual person.

i started recording this show called "shimmy" on fittv and it's pretty fun, too. my friends and i wanted to take a belly dancing class but this is cheaper... and if i play a couple episodes at a time, we can get a full-hour of belly dancing, similar to what a class would offer.
